Lace Hat Pattern

I wish that I was a little more creative and could come up with some great name for this hat, but that just is not the case.  The hat is made using lace stitches, so it will be the Lace Hat for now.  If anyone has any suggestions for another name, I am totally open to hearing them.

The hat did not take too long to knit.  An important thing to remember is using a yarn that has a little stretch and making sure to not let your stitches get too tight.  There is a lot of moving yarn from pegs to pegs and if your stitches are too tight it will make it very hard to complete.

                                                                        Lace Hat

You will need:  a loom with multiples of 6loom hook, stitch markers, and yarn with some stretch.

Skills you will need to make hat: e-wrap,  knit (k), purl (p), yarn over (yo), and knit 3 together (k3tog).

Notes:  Stitch markers are not necessary, but they do make it so much easier to keep up with your pattern.  I started using stitch markers earlier this year and I really can't believe it took me so long to use them.
I used Caron Brand Simply Soft in Victorian Rose.  I think it is obvious by now if you have read through my blog that Caron Simply Soft is one of my favorite yarns.
I was able to use the green Knifty Knitter with 36 pegs.  I normally cannot use the green loom for adult hats, but this hat has such an open design that it will stretch and not look silly on an adult.
I used two strands of yarn held as one.
I used the u-wrap for the knit stitch.  This helps to make sure the stitches are not too tight.
Yarn Over - you will need to move the loops that are on this peg, so the peg will be empty.  Take your working yarn and just lay it in front of the peg.
Knit 3 Together - You will be taking the yarn that is on the pegs before and after the peg and put it on the peg.  You will then lay your working yarn on top of the peg that will have 3 loops on it and knit over.  This can be tricky.  But, if your stitches are not too tight it is possible.  I also found that if I just knit them over one at a time this worked well.

Now finally the actual pattern of the hat.  :)

1.  If you are using stitch markers split your loom into sections of 6.

2. Cast on using the e-wrap.

3.  I made a ribbed brim by doing p2, k2 * repeat this around the loom.  Continue doing this for a total of 8 rows.

4.  YO, K3tog, Yo, P, P, P * repeat this pattern around the loom.

5.  K, K, K, P, P, P *repeat

6.  P,P,P, YO, K3TOG, YO * repeat

7.  P,P,P,K,K,K * repeat

8.  Repeat patterns 4-7 until hat reaches the desired length.  I had to do the pattern for a total of 8 times.  I probably could have done it 7 times, but I like for my hats to come down over my ears.

9.  Once your hat is big enough, decrease your pegs by half.  Take yarn on peg 1 and move it to peg 2.  Take the bottom yarn over the top yarn.  Continue moving all the yarn on  odd pegs to even pegs.

10.  Finish by gathering the hat in whatever way you like.

I hope you enjoy this pattern.  If you need any help with hat, please leave a comment.  If you make a hat using this pattern I'd love to see it.  Please leave a comment with a link to your picture.  Feel free to share this pattern, but please include a link to my blog.

  3. GoodKnit Kisses - thank you so much for the nice comments. I have thought about making videos for you tube, but just have not taken the time to do it. If you did make a video and gave me credit for the hat that would be great. :) And I would love to get the hat added to AllFreeKnitting.com. Thanks.

Brenda - thank you for checking out my hat. Your blog is one of the first blogs I started reading when I started loom knitting.

  5. Sarah, sorry your hat didn't come out like you were hoping. What kind of yarn did you use and did you have a part that was difficult to complete? Let me know and I will try and answer any questions.

  8. Sorry you had trouble with the hat. I will be happy to help if I can. I don't think there are any videos. I could try and make a video, but it would have to be sometime next week. I've never made one before, but if that would help with this hat I could try. Or I could do a picture tutorial. Again, it would have to be sometime next week. Let me know. I would love to help. Can you post a link to a picture of your hat?

  12. I really wanna try this hat, I am just unsure of the Yarn over part, could you maybe go into a little more depth. I don't necessarily need a video, just more explanation if possible? please?!! :) thanks :)
the way i understand it is the yarn over is to go over the pegs on each side of the K3tog stitch? so you aren't dropping stitches? if so, how do you do so? just by wrapping around the peg like when you cast on?...

  13. Hi Marie, I will try my best to explain the yarn over and k3tog. When you get to the peg for the yarn over DO NOT wrap it like when you cast on. You want to just take the working yarn and lay it flat across the empty peg. This is what is going to create the lace in the pattern. When you get to the peg that had the yarn over on the next round you will just knit over like normal.
So you will have 3 pegs that will be used to do the yarn overs and the k3tog. 1. The first peg will be empty because you will be moving the stitch to the second peg. 2. The second peg will now have 2 stitches on it. 3. You will then take the stitch from the 3rd peg and be putting them on the second peg. 4. Now your second peg will have 3 stitches on it. 5. Take your working yarn and lay it in front of the first peg. 6. Take the working yarn and lay it flat across the second peg and knit ALL three stitches over the working yarn (this is a flat knit). 7. Take your working yarn and lay it flat across the 3rd peg. 8. You will now purl the next 3 pegs.
I hope this helps. It is really the best I can explain it without pictures or a video. Please let me know if this makes sense.

    1. Thank you so much for the farther explanation :) it helped so very much. I just taught myself all the Stitches to make this hat. I had never done any other stitch than the e wrap. But because of you generous farther explanation, i have it down :) i am making this hat for my grandma For her birthday and i think she will love it. Thank you thank you for sharing this pattern! I love it!

  14. I found this pattern shortly after you posted it, but it took me until this weekend to try it. I just finished and love the lace look. I think I'm going to use the same pattern to create a matching scarf and gift the set to a friend. Thanks so much!

  15. hi, I'm trying the pattern and found that in the row 4, I only do 1P instead of 4P's to end the section. this way there's 6 "stitches" per set, instead of 8. it's going perfect. if u don't mind, i'll post the picture in your facebook acc. thanks for share the pattern, and your knowledge at all.

  16. Hi Ydsia, I look forward to seeing your picture. But, all of the rows have 6 stitches and not 8. Where the knit 3 together is you are using the stitches from the pegs before and after, so it really is just made on one peg. Hope that helps.

  21. I'm a visual learning and I was hoping that there would be a video on this... I hope you can help me out! Also, on step 4 I get how you K3tog but how do you purl after with no string? Is that supposed to be a hole later??? Thanks for your help!

  22. Hi! I'm a begginner knitter and I'm very excited with your pattern. It looks beautiful and it's not too complicated... However, I'm confused when it comes to finishing the hat: do you knit one more round of steps 4-7 after decreasing pegs by half or you just gather the stitches together? I'm not quite sure about how to do this.
Thanks for your pattern and for your help!

    1. Irene, when you decrease by half just go ahead and gather the hat to finish it. Hope you enjoyed the pattern.

  27. Thank you so much for sharing this pattern! I've been knitting on the loom for about a week now and I've made two hats, one for my daughter (cotton candy multi-color) and one for myself (light gray). They both turned out beautifully, the gray one was much easier to see the pretty lace so I highly suggest a solid color. We love them!!!

  28. what a nice pattern. can i translate it in flemisch and place it on mij fb page?

  29. I've started this and had to start all over so many times. This is my first loom project, I have been trying to get the whole yarn over k3 together part down. I'm left with tons of holes because I read the yarn over, knit 3, yarn over as 3 separate stitches... It is written as so. ? If it just said knit 3 I would think it would make more sense??? I want to make a hat for my daughter, just getting frustrated doing all the brim work and then having to start all over again. And on a related note, why is it so hard to find info on loom knitting on the web? I love this pattern but I have not found many others to choose from anyways. I just want to make a cute little toddler hat, with more detail then just plain knitting the whole thing!

  31. What size loom would you use to make this for a toddler or young child?

  32. I just love this pattern. I'm finishing it off now. The only thing I think I did different is that I did an e-wrap on the peg with three. I 've never had good luck with the flat knit (I'm pretty new to looms and haven't mastered that tension yet) The hat isn't off my loom yet, so I can't decide if it looks just like yours, but it's pretty! Thanks for the pattern!

  34. What a gift: sharing this pattern with us. I am fairly new to looming and do a lot of hats and scarves for charities. But now I'm working on hats for 22 grandchildren/great-grandchildren. This pattern is wonderful and I so appreciate your detailed explanation of the yarn over K3TOG. Haven't done anything that advanced yet and I now feel confident to try it. Thank you again for your kindness.

  36. I would really like to try this hat but even with written instructions I don’t quite get it. I have watched videos and taught myself the purl stitch and to knit a scarf etc. I would love to see a video with audible instructions. Thanks so much.
