I Love...

Obviously I love when I finish a project and I am happy with the way it turns out.  The other thing I love is when I finish a skein of yarn.  There is just something satisfying about finishing the whole skein without any left-overs.

Over the weekend I worked on finishing up the headband/neck warmer that I was working on with needles.  I used Vanna's Choice yarn in Beige.  I doubled up my yarn, so mine is definitely more like a neck warmer.  I like the way it turned out.  I think I am going to have to block it though and I have never blocked anything before, so this will be a first.  I need to add a button and then take a picture of it.

I also started working on a Red Ridged Lace Hat for my cousin.  The pattern can be found in the book "I Can't Believe I'm Loom Knitting ".  This is one of my favorite patterns, but I always end up with very sore fingers.  I had enough yarn left over and wanted to finish up the skein.  I decided to work on an infinity scarf.  I used the stockinette stitch using the diagonal wrap method.  You can see more info on it here at this site.  I just kept knitting until I used all the yarn. Then finished the ends like I do on the reversible headbands.  I am really pleased with the way it turned out.  I used Simply Soft Caron brand yarn in Autumn Red.  I need to get pictures of this too.

In other news, the hat that is on my Martha Stewart Loom has turned into a problem.  :(  I was concerned when I started the hat that it would be hard to finish the hat with there being so many pegs.  When I finally got to the end of the hat, I figured I could just decrease by half and then decrease by half again.  Unfortunately, this did not work.  I got the hat off and not only was the hat too small, but the top where I gathered it was a wreck.  I had to figure out a way to get it back on the loom and this also turned into a problem. I was having a hard time finding all the stitches to put back on the pegs and then sometimes would drop the stitch before I could get it back on.  After about 45 minutes, I did manage to get the hat back on the loom, but had to frog a bunch to get it ready to be worked on again.  I am a little discouraged.   Should I just gather the top with 80 stitches?  That seems like it would be way to bulky!  Is there a way to decrease and have a nice finished top like I do when I use the round purple Knifty Knitter ?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Rainbow Rib-It with Pom Pom

Yesterday when I was working on getting all my hats finished I found a hat in the pile that I was not very happy with.  My daughter loved the colors, but it was just way too long.  When I made it last winter I made it so that either a child or adult could wear it.  But, the more I looked at it the more I did not like it.  For a while I left it thinking that maybe someone would like it and buy it anyway.  We left for soccer practice and by the time I got home and I looked at it again, I starting taking it apart.

Before Picture

I wanted to figure out a way to make it better.  I was also hoping to not have to "frog" the whole hat.  The first step was taking a long piece of scrap yarn of a completely different color.  With my yarn threaded I then worked my way around the hat making sure that I picked up all 48 stitches.  I was then able to take the hat and using the loops that were threaded put them back on the loom.  It really didn't matter if I picked up the stitches in the same row, I would be able to take care of that later.  Once my purple loom had loops on every peg I was able to see if I needed to work backwards and take any yarn off to get the hat to match up.  I will not lie.  This whole process did take longer than I thought it would.  Once the hat was ready I was able to gather the hat again.

I already knew that I wanted to make a pom-pom with the yarn that was originally on the hat.  So, with the pink, yellow, and orange yarn I made a large pom-pom using my Clover pom-pom maker.  Below is a picture of the finished hat.  I am very pleased with the way it looks now.  And, even though it took an hour of "frogging" and re-working, I am very happy with it.

Penguin Hat

I have been having all these ideas of things that I want to make, but do not have enough time or looms to make everything that I am thinking of.  I have decided that once I sell 3 hats on etsy  I am going to buy myself a fancy loom.  I haven't decided yet which brand to go with.  If anyone that reads my blog and has any suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment with the loom that they like.

A week or so ago I signed up for a craft show.  I have a great collection of hats already made, but I wanted to have some new things made.  I came up with a penguin hat.  I looked on-line to see if there was already a pattern that I could follow.  Nothing was out there for knitting on looms, but there were a couple of ones for needle knitting.  I was unable to use the pattern though, so I came up with my own design.  I had to make it in a few parts.  I needed a white belly and an orange nose. I added white buttons for the eyes.

I think he is cute.  I am pretty happy with the way he turned out.  I made the white belly part first to make sure that I would be able to get the shape that I was wanting.  I made the first one too big, so I think I will make an adult version of the penguin hat.

I had the looms out again today and worked on another hat.  I made a hat using lace stitches and it came out really nice.  It is very different from anything else that I've made.  I am hoping that I get a chance tomorrow to post a blog with pictures.

2 Hats for Spring

On my last post I said that I was going to work on the Spiral Lace Hat with some changes and use cotton yarn.  What I tried did not work at all and I ended up breaking both strands of yarn that I was using.  I am still thinking of what I can do with the pattern to make it better.

While thinking about that pattern I found a free pattern for a hat that looked great for Spring.  You can find the pattern here.  I used the repeat pattern that is in the hat, but did not follow the other instructions.  I also made the hat two times with a small change on the k2tog.

I used cotton yarn and used the purple round loom.  For the brim I did the garter stitch for 6 rows.  I did the normal yarn over (put the working yarn in front of the peg) and k2togI did the 5 steps for the pattern 8 times.  For the crown I took the yarn on the first peg and moved it to the second peg and knit the bottom loop over the top loop.

When I made the hat the second time I used Caron brand Simply Soft.  For the brim I did the garter stitch for 8 rows.  I then worked the same pattern, but instead of k2tog, I moved the yarn from the peg that was going to be empty for the yarn over and put it on the next peg and just lifted the bottom loops over the top loops.  On the empty peg I put the working yarn in front of the peg and then put it behind the next peg.  For the crown I finished it the same way I did the first one.  I like the way this hat turned out.

I am not sure what I am going to knit next.  I was thinking of making a rainbow hat or searching Ravelry for another pattern to use on my loom.  As always, I'll post pictures here when I am done.

Everyday Beret

A few weeks ago a great pattern for the Everyday Beret  was posted and I had to give it a try.  I have been looking for a beret pattern, but haven't found any that I really liked, so was happy to find this free pattern.

I have made this hat two times now.  I followed the instructions as written the first time, but used the green loom.   It fits more like a slouch hat and I really like that

When I made the hat the second time, I did not add the 4 rows of e-wrap after the brim.  I also made it normal hat size.  I used bulky yarn for the first time and am really happy with the way it turned out.  It looks small, but it fits great.

Cupcake Hat Pattern

This hat is super cute (if I do say so myself) and pretty easy to knit on the loom.  All you need is to know how to flat knit, purl, and e-wrap on the loom, a round loom, and the spool loom.

I used the Caron brand Simply Soft and I cast on using two strands as one on the green loom.

1.  I cast on with brown yarn for my cake color.  I used the basic e-wrap for this.
2.  I knit with the purl2, knit2 pattern for 14 rows.  You can do this for as much or as little as you like depending on how big you want your cake/brim to be.

3.  Now I added the pink for the icing.  I cast on again with the basic e-wrap and knit over.
4.  Knit two more rows with the e-wrap.
5.  On this row, knit2tog and wrap the empty peg with the yarn.
6.  Knit 3 more rows with e-wrap.
7.  Bring up your first row of pink (or whatever color you are using for the icing) like you were making a brim for a hat.

8.  Purl row
9. Knit row
10.  Continue the pattern with rows 8 and 9 until the hat reaches your desired length.
11.   Finish hat by taking it off the loom using the gather method.

Now if you want to add the cherry this is how I made it:
1.  Cast on to the spool loom to the side with 5 pegs.  Use two strands of yarn as one.
2. Purl row
3. Knit row
4.Continue with row 2 and 3 for 6 more rows.
5.  Use your needle and thread to take the yarn off the loom.  I just pulled down hard enough to tie the top and to help shape the yarn into a ball.
6.  I made sure there was enough yarn hanging off the cherry, so that I could sew it to the top.

Rib-It Hat

Have I mentioned how much I love RavelryI love how there are so many great patterns available for free and I love getting to see all the amazing creations that people have come up with.

I found a great hat pattern there the other day and wanted to see if I could use the pattern on the loom.  Here is the link to the pattern Pro Bono that I used for my inspiration.

I was not able to do exactly what the pattern says when it came to shaping the crown, so I just experimented.  I am happy with the hat and thought that I would post how I made this pattern work for me on the loom.  If you don't think the crown looks that great, you could just skip the shaping and just gather the top like normal.

I used Caron brand Simply soft to make this hat.  I used the green round loom, the yellow long loom, and loom clips.

I used two strands of yarn as one and did the basic e-wrap to cast on all 36 pegs.
For about 8 inches I used the pattern knit2, purl2

Here is where I began decreasing to shape the crown:
1.  Ptog, k2 until the end of the round ( I really am not sure if I did the Ptog correctly or not. What I did was, I moved the first loop on the peg to the second peg, then used my yarn to purl, by bringing both loops off the peg).
2.  I then took the hat off the round loom and moved it to the yellow long loom, so that I could keep all the stitches together.
3.  P1, k2 for 3 rounds
4. P1, K2tog to the end of the round
5. I again took the hat off of the loom and moved my stitches together, so there was no open spaces.
6.  K all stitches for 2 rounds
7.  I added my loom clips and started decreasing until I had 9 pegs with loops.
8.  Knit around again and then gather your hat.

There may have been an easier way to shape the crown, but I really was not sure.  If anyone wants to comment on what they would have done differently, please do.

I love making something and being happy with the finished creation.  I was very happy when I finished a hat I made today.  I loved the color, the design, and really everything about the hat.

I used a pattern I found on Ravelry.com and tweaked the pattern somewhat to make it work on the loom.  I didn't have to do much, but still made some small changes.  The pattern can be found here.

I used the green loom and this made a very tight brim.  I love the way the brim looks, but will need to use the yellow loom next time or just use a brim that doesn't get turned up.  I only needed to make the pattern 3 times to finish the hat and did not do any kind of decrease when I finished it.  I just sewed up the top, so there was not an open hole.

I am pretty sure my husband is going to want a hat with this pattern, so I will be making it again soon.  I plan to make some more changes now that I know how this pattern looks on the loom.  When I finish it I will make sure and post the pictures and tell you the other changes I make.

Random Knitting Thoughts and Another Hat

I've been knitting so much these days that I find when I try and go to sleep at night, I end up knitting in my head.  I am thinking about patterns and how I could change them.  I am moving the yarn around the loom in my head.  I do this for an hour or longer unable to sleep.  Does this happen to anyone else?

My husband told me the other day that I need to make myself a hat.  The thing is that every time I've made a hat that fits me, I either want to sell it or I give it someone in my family.  I have a hard time keeping things that I make for myself.
As a stay-at-home mom I obviously am not able to contribute to the family financially.  I love that etsy has made it easy for people who enjoy making crafts to have a place to sell what they are making without ridiculous fees.  This fall I decided to add some of my knit creations to our shop and I have sold a few of the things I have added.  It's exciting to sign on and find out that someone has bought something or even added an item to their favorite items.  I even got "fan mail" the other day from someone telling me she loved a hat that I made and how unique it was.
The only things I have kept are things with flaws.  So, for now I have an infinity scarf and a purple ear-warmer.  The flaws are minor, but I still would never be able to sell them or even give them as gifts.

I don't think I posted on this blog, but I made a goal to make something every week.  52 Projects for 2011.  I've done really good keeping this goal and for this week I made a panda hat.  Another project from the book "I Can't Believe I'm Loom Knitting".  I followed the pattern somewhat, but made my own changes to it and will be making another bear hat soon with even more changes.  My daughter has already taken this hat as her own and now my son would like one too.

I have no plans right now for what I will be putting on the loom next.  I made a scarflet that just needs some buttons.  Maybe, just a simple hat with some fun yarn I bought weeks ago and have not done anything with yet.

Working My Way Through "I Can't Believe I'm Loom Knitting"

In November I bought the book "I Can't Believe I'm Loom Knitting" by Kathy Norris as a birthday gift for myself.  I found it at Hobby Lobby and had a 40% off coupon, so I got the book for around $7.  It was $7 very well spent.  This book is great.  The pictures in the book are helpful, her directions are clear, and the patterns she includes in the book are very creative.  I have been working my way through her book and have been happy with everything I've made so far.  I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves loom knitting.

The lattice hat I made last week was a Kathy Norris pattern.  She doesn't include a pattern for a lattice hat in the book though.   I posted in one of the yahoo groups if anyone knew how to turn her flat panel into a hat and guess who responded to my question?  Kathy Norris!!  The author of the book.  It was around Christmas and she even sent me a response to my personal e-mail!  I couldn't believe that she took her time to get back to me and then she even posted the pattern for the hat in the group.  If you are a member of the decoraccentsinc loom knitting group on yahoo you can find the pattern in the files section.

Last night I made the ridged lace hat from the book.  My fingers are so sore from this pattern!  I will post later today with a picture and some of my notes about making this hat.

It's Finally Finished - Lattice Knit Hat

I finally finished that lattice knit hat that I have been working on for two weeks.  It was a pretty easy pattern, but still took a while to work on.  I am very happy with the way that it turned out.  Here are pictures of the finished hat.

Close up of the pattern.

Here is the etsy listing for the hat Lattice Hat
